How to Find Trustworthy Recommendations Near You

A practical guide to separating a genuine local recommendation from marketing dressed up as one — and how to find the good stuff faster.

Not all recommendations are created equal. Before you act on one — a restaurant, a service, a product — it helps to know what you're actually looking at.

First, check what you can learn about the recommender. A profile and a clear reason give you context that a star average cannot. They are useful clues, not proof of authenticity. For practical warning signs, see Which?'s guide to spotting fake reviews.

Second, look for specificity. "Great food, would recommend" tells you almost nothing. "Ask for the corner table and get the lamb, not the chicken" tells you the person actually paid attention. Specific recommendations are harder to fake and more useful when they're real.

Third, consider proximity and recency. A recommendation from years ago may still be useful, but check current opening hours, menus and availability with the business. Explore the NineReco map to start with a location, then judge each recommendation on its own detail.

Finally, pay attention to people whose priorities match yours. A person who explains their budget and preferences may be more helpful than a stranger with the same star rating. If you are choosing somewhere to eat, use our restaurant decision guide alongside recent information from the venue.
